Instructions

  1. Measure the circumference of your head in inches or centimeters using a tape measure (or string). That is, measure the distance around your head where the brim of the hat (the bottom of the hat) will touch your head.
  2. Compare that number to the "Head Circumference" ranges above to find the range you fall within, then look above for your size. If you happen to fall within two hat size ranges (e.g. 3XL and 3XL-4XL) then hats in both sizes will fit you.
  3. If your hat size is included on the our chart, you will find a hat at our store that will comfortably fit you.

Note: While all our big hats are designed to have substantially more depth than "regular sized" mass marketed hats, the larger the hat size the more depth our hats will have.

Example

  1. Your head measures 25 inches (63.5cm) around
  2. Looking up at chart, this size fits under both 3XL and 3XL-4XL sizes (so both sizes would fit).

Actual mathematical method to calculate YOUR LARGE hat size

If you’re the mathematician type who would like to understand how large hat sizes are actually calculated and whether our BIG HATS will fit you, please review the following instructions:

  1. Measure the circumference of your head in inches (The distance around your head where the brim of the hat will touch your head).
  2. Divide the circumference by 3.14, the result is your hat size. Convert the decimal to a fraction. Round the fraction to the nearest 1/8th.
  3. If your hat size falls on or between 7 1/2 to 9 1/4, you will find a hat at our store that will comfortably fit you.

Example:

  1. Your head measures 26 inches around
  2. 26 divided by 3.14 equals 8.3. Your hat size is rounded to the nearest 1/8th, so your hat size would be 8 1/4.
  3. Your head is the right size for our regular big hats

LARGE HAT SIZE - FAQS

1] What hat size is a large?

Since the average head size for for men is size 7 1/4 and women size 7, we consider the "entry level" large hat size to be 7 1/2, but goes up to size 9 hats and beyond. To simplify hat sizing, large hat sizes are often indicated by ranges including 2XL, 3XL and 4XL.

2] Why are hats sized using two different sizing "scales"?

Generally, fitted hats, whose size cannot be adjusted, are sized using a numeric scale (example: Size 8). On the other hand, adjustable hats are often sized using a range scale such as S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL and 4XL.  Range scales are meant to simplify hat purchasing by reducing sizing complexity. In reality, a number of fitted hats are commonly sized using range scales for simplicity, especially since many allow sizing tape to be easily added to the inside of the hat (under the inside hat band) to reduce/adjust the size of a fitted hat.

3] What is considered the biggest hat size?

Although there may be a world record somewhere out there, the biggest hat size sold on the internet fits up to size 9 1/4. This would translate into a size 4XL hat. On rare occasion, specialized milliners will hand make hats larger than this for individual customers.
