AOL Photo Display Secret:  To speed up the display process, AOL compresses most graphics and photos prior to displaying them.  Unfortunately, this hugely reduces the quality of pictures displayed often making them fuzzy.   We've found our hat pictures (as well as other internet pictures) look much more true to life in "uncompressed" mode.

How To Fix AOL Photo Problem: (for AOL 9.0)

AOL provides a method to turn off the data compression which will allow you to see all pictures and graphics as they were originally intended. You only need to do this one time! Given that many people now have higher speed access to AOL it shouldn’t slow your display down much at all, but it will substantially improve picture quality. To turn off compression mode, perform the following:

  1. Select the "Settings" button located on the AOL title bar (a list of options will then be displayed)
  2. Select the "Internet [web]" option on the screen
  3. Under the "Web Graphics Compression" text, select "Never Compress Graphics"
  4. Select "Save"
  5. Again, select the "Internet [web]" option on the screen
  6. Select the "Clear My Footprints" tab
  7. Select "Clear My Footprints" and then the "Yes" button when it asks you "Are You Sure" (this will clear the poor quality Big Hat Store photos from your machine, so that the higher resolution photos can be displayed)
  8. Select "Save"

How To Fix AOL Photo Problem:  (for AOL 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0)

AOL provides a method to turn off the data compression which will allow you to see all pictures and graphics as they were originally intended.  You only need to do this one time!  It may slow down displays just a bit, but it will substantially improve picture quality.  To turn off compression mode, perform the following:

  1. Select the "Settings" button in the middle of the AOL title bar  (a list of options will then be displayed)
  2. From the options list, select "Preferences" option (the Preferences page will then be displayed)
  3. For AOL 6.0-7.0, select the "Internet Properties (WWW)" option.  For AOL 8.0, scroll down and select "Internet Settings" feature.  The AOL Internet Properties page will then be displayed
  4. Select the "Web Graphics" tab (Web Graphics options will be displayed)
  5. Select the "never compress graphics" option
  6. Select the "Apply" button to finalize
  7. Select "okay" to close "Web Graphics" tab
  8. Select the "General" tab
  9. Select the "Delete Files" button (so that the poor resolution picture will be cleared from you computer)
  10. Select "Ok" button
  11. Select the "X" in upper right hand corner to close "Preferences" box
  12. Select the reload (circular arrow) button on the AOL menu at top, so that AOL will display the high resolution version of the images.
